Rural Health Fellowship Curriculum Outline
Thirteen months total starting Aug 1st. Three weeks vacation (only one week can be taken at rural site)
6 months Rural Setting Training (Emphasis on EM and Inpatient Medicine in Critical Access Setting)
- 4/6 – 6/6 months in Orofino Idaho
- 2/6 months can be completed at rural site of choice or future site of employment
*Rural Rotations should not be shorter than 8 weeks to reduce travel stress
5 Months with advanced EM/ICU specialty care training in Coeur d’Alene
- 4 sessions/week FMRC
- 15 ED shifts Kootenai ED
- 12 ICU shifts admitting team late shift (3 days sequentially minimum, weekends preferred)
- 4-7 days Trauma Service (sequential days required)
- 6-8 day with IR procedures (LP, para, thora emphasis Wed/Thurs only)
- 1-2 weeks FMS inpatient attending (full week or broken up into 3-4 days shifts)
- 1-2 days EMS ride along
- 1 week Inpatient Neurology Stroke Team (must be 5-7 days sequentially)
- 3-4 days AM Anesthesia OR Intubations
- 2 days ICU RT
- 2 days Inpatient/ED/ID pharmacy shadow
- 5 day for travel and CME, The Difficult Airway Course
- 2 days to complete ATLS if not done prior to start of fellowship, preferably Aug-Oct
- Optional Elective Additions Pending Schedule Availability:
– 1 week Kootenai Hospitalist Inpatient Team (must be 7 days sequentially)
– 4 days Kootenai ED POCUS, ½ day scanning and ½ day virtual modules
– 1-2 weeks BH elective
– 6 days Pediatric ED Spokane Sacred Heart
– 4 days TCU/SNF Care
1 Month Leadership/Faculty Development in Coeur d’Alene
- Presentation at North Idaho Primary Care Matters
- FMR Grand Rounds Presentation
- Faculty Lead Rural Simulations Didactics FMR
- 3 Rural Case presentations at residency didactics over year as fellow
- 2 – 8 sessions precepting as faculty in FMRC
- Resident Retreat FMS inpatient service coverage
- 1-2 days Residency Didactics Faculty Lead
Leadership Requirement
Fellow will be engaged in 2 leadership communities longitudinally over fellowship year and may include QI work/case review/facility operations/MM/medical education etc. at either rural site or CDA QI/Community Project Requirement. Fellow will complete a project of their choice with focus on QI or community engagement in either rural site or CDA.
